FOREL 2026: The Great Departure Is Approaching
The scientific sailing vessel FOREL Heritage is preparing to set sail once again for its third major polar expedition. From May 27 to October 6, 2026, FOREL will navigate along the west and east coasts of Greenland, hosting several international scientific programs dedicated to studying the impacts of climate change on Greenlandic fjords.
After an especially intense winter shipyard period, the crew is now ready to welcome the 2026 scientific mobilization aboard. In the coming weeks, onboard laboratories, scientific instruments, and sampling equipment will gradually be installed before departure.
On May 27, FOREL will leave its home port from the pontoons of the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly in Lorient to cross the North Atlantic toward Greenland.
This summer’s mission will focus on glaciers, carbon cycles, polar microbiomes, contaminants, particles, marine biodiversity, and innovative robotic technologies designed for extreme environments. Three major scientific campaigns will shape the expedition between Kangerlussuaq, Narsaq, and Ittoqqortoormiit, with international research teams joining the vessel throughout the season.
