FOREL has docked in Québec City !

Navigation 12.06.2025

FOREL is currently docked at the Louise Basin in the Port of Quebec to showcase its laboratories and ongoing projects — a strategic stopover before setting sail again for Leg 2 of the 2025 expedition.

During its stop at the Port of Quebec, FOREL welcomed aboard a delegation of researchers, scientific partners, and institutional representatives. Guided by Stéphane Aebischer, CEO of FOREL, and Jean-François Levasseur, the ship’s captain, visitors had the opportunity to explore the onboard laboratories and discover the capabilities of this scientific sailboat designed for research in polar and coastal zones. A strong collective energy emerged from this meeting at the dock. We warmly thank everyone for your enthusiasm, curiosity, and presence aboard.

From June 14 to July 3, Leg 2 will take FOREL into the Saguenay Fjord, the estuary, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in collaboration with research teams from:

  • Université Laval

  • Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC)

  • ETH Zurich

The program includes:

  • Water mass circulation (Prof. Philippe Archambault, ULaval)

  • Natural and anthropogenic micro- and nanoparticles (Prof. Julien Gigault, ULaval)

  • Mapping of the fjord walls (Prof. Vincent Lecours, UQAC)

  • Zooplankton biodiversity in high latitude regions (Dr. Meike Vogt, ETH Zurich)

This scientific adventure will also be narrated through a comic strip!

Madeleine-Zoé Corbeil Robitaille, a PhD candidate in biology at Université Laval, is joining the expedition to document the work carried out by Prof. Julien Gigault’s team. Through her sketches, she will capture the scientific missions, life onboard, and the landscapes traversed — an original and sensitive way to make science accessible to a broad audience. She will contribute to the creation of a new episode of the Carnets de FOREL, our series of science outreach comics.

A unique opportunity to dive into the behind-the-scenes of a scientific… and artistic expedition!
