During our stop in Uummannaq, a small Inuit hunting and fishing community settled on a mountainous island, we had the privilege of spending a precious moment with the children and educators of the Uummannaq Children’s Home — Greenland’s oldest residential care institution, founded in 1929, and one of the northernmost in the world.
Thanks to the warm welcome of Ann Andreasen, who has been leading the Children’s Home since 1985, we shared an emotional moment: first on land, then at sea, when the children came aboard FOREL..
They explored life on board and the ongoing scientific programs, including research led by biologist Caroline Bouchard (@ulaval) on Arctic marine ecosystems.
It was a true exchange: the children shared insights into their culture, and we opened our world of science, navigation, and life at sea to them.
A huge thank you to Ann Andreasen for making this encounter possible.
We hope it will be only the first chapter of a longer story.
