We just arrived in the Saguenay Fjord, a spectacular flooded glacial valley stretching nearly 100 km. This fjord is part of the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, a protected marine area covering over 1,200 km² where science, biodiversity, and cultural heritage come together.
- On the agenda for this leg:
- Water mass studies (@ULaval – Prof. Philippe Archambault)
- Natural and anthropogenic micro- and nanoparticles (@ULaval – Prof. Julien Gigault)
- Fjord wall mapping (@UQAC – Prof. Vincent Lecours)
In pictures:
1. First day of coastal navigation to record bathymetry. At the stern, everything’s ready for the next station (CTD and acoustic probe).
2. The captain in action, hauling up the CTD with the winch!
3. Saguenay Fjord, operational plan visible.
4. CTD deployment with Yvan at the stern and Nitya assisting with deployment.
5. Entering the Saguenay Fjord
Onboard, we are also welcoming illustrator Madeleine-Zoé Corbeil Robitaille (@lapsus_visuel), a biology PhD student at Université Laval. She’s capturing the mission by following the work of Prof. Julien Gigault’s team.
Follow the mission and behind-the-scenes of research aboard FOREL throughout this leg!
